چکیده

We present results from geomorphic mapping and visible to near-infrared spectral analyses of the Jezero crater paleolake basin and its associated watershed. The goal of this study is to understand the provenance of the sedimentary deposits within this open-basin lake using a source-to-sink approach. Two fan deposits located within the basin have distinct visible to near-infrared mineralogic signatures measured by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM). The northern fan is spectrally characterized by a mixture of Mg-rich carbonate and olivine, while the western fan is characterized by Fe/Mg-smectite (e.g., saponite or nontronite) with variable amounts of Mg-rich carbonate and olivine in isolated exposures. The watersheds of these deposits contain a variety of geomorphic units that are likely to have supplied sediment to the Jezero crater paleolake, as the fluvial valleys that fed the basin incise these units. The geomorphic units include exposures of Fe/Mg-smectite-, olivine-, and Mg-rich carbonate-bearing terrain. We show that the difference in fan deposit mineralogy is a function of the areal exposure of the major geomorphic units within their watersheds. This indicates that the spectrally dominant aqueous alteration minerals in the fan deposits are primarily detrital, or transported, in nature and did not form in situ. We conclude that the aqueous alteration of the units in the watershed occurred prior to the fluvial activity that carved the valleys of the Jezero crater paleolake system, and that the two periods of aqueous activity are not genetically related.

Bulk mineralogy of the NE Syrtis and Jezero crater regions of Mars derived through thermal infrared spectral analyses

We investigated the area to the northwest of the Isidis impact basin (hereby referred to as “NW Isidis”) using thermal infrared emission datasets to characterize and quantify bulk surface mineralogy throughout this region. This area is home to Jezero crater and the watershed associated with its two deltaic deposits in addition to NE Syrtis and the strong and diverse visible/near-infrared spectr...

Stratigraphy and Evolution of Delta Channel Deposits, Jezero Crater, Mars

Introduction: The Jezero impact crater hosted an open-basin lake [1] that was active during the valley network forming era on early Mars [2]. This basin contains a well exposed delta deposit at the mouth of the western inlet valley (Fig. 1) [1,3-5]. The fluvial stratigraphy of this deposit provides a record of the channels that built the delta over time. Here we describe observations of the str...

Mars sedimentary rock erosion rates constrained using crater counts, with applications to organic-matter preservation and to the global dust cycle

Small-crater counts on Mars light-toned sedimentary rock are often inconsistent with any isochron; these data are usually plotted then ignored. We show (using an 18-HiRISE-image, > 10 4 -crater dataset) that these non-isochron crater counts are often well-fit by a model where crater production is balanced by crater obliteration via steady exhumation. For these regions, we fit erosion rates. We ...

Late alluvial fan formation in southern Margaritifer Terra, Mars

[1] Crater statistics indicate alluvial fans, crater floor, and fill/mantling deposits within impact craters >50 km in diameter in southern Margaritifer Terra were likely emplaced during multiple epochs: fans formed during the Amazonian or near the Amazonian‐Hesperian boundary, crater floor deposits are likely Hesperian in age, and most fill/mantling deposits are Amazonian. The regional distrib...
